The Hurricane cocktail was created at the historic Pat O’Brien’s bar, sometime in the 1940’s. The name of the drink comes from the shape of the glass it is served in, which resembles a hurricane lamp - Similar to a modern-day oil, or kerosene, lantern. During that time, certain liquor, like whiskey, was in short supply but there was an overabundance of rum. Some claim that during WWII, manufacturing replaced domestic distilleries while Caribbean isles continued shipping rum to the states, leading to oversupply; Others claim that the decade of prohibition lead to imported rum being stockpiled in warehouses, since it couldn’t legally be sold. Both are probably true but either way, this resulted in bar owners being forced to order 50 cases of rum for every 1 case of whiskey. To sell the rum, O’Brien invented the Hurricane; A large glass, heavy handed pour of rum, and some fruit juices to overshadow the liquor. 🍊🍒
