Nestled in the French Quarter, on the corner of Iberville and Royal, is the Hotel Monteleone. The exterior of the property is stunning, but the real jaw-dropper is located indoors. Installed in 1949, the hotel boasts the Carousel Bar, a spinning bar created in the likeness of a carousel.
The Carousel Bar was once the favorite of famous 19th century authors like Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, William Faulkner, Anne Rice, Truman Capote, and even Eudora Welty. These authors’ love for the venue can also be seen in their writing, where the bar makes many an appearance.
The Vieux Carre (pronounced “voh-care-eh” by locals) was invented at the Carousel Bar in the late 1930s by the head bartender, Walter Bergeron. The recipe is said to have been first published in 1937 in “Famous New Orleans Drinks and How to Mix ‘Em”, but other sources claim the drink wasn’t invented until the end of 1938. Regardless, the Vieux Carre stands as the Carousel Bar’s signature cocktail and one of its most frequently ordered drinks.

Aches and pains happen for people of all ages. You twist wrong, step awkwardly, bang your shin into a table leg, or hit your head on a shelf standing up without looking. All these types of pains heal in a few days with rest and maybe antibiotic ointment. Chronic pain is the bane of people’s existence because it never seems to go away. Taking pills only masks the pain, they never address the cause and fix the issue permanently.
Unless you have a genetic defect, you’re not born with chronic pain, it develops over the years from your lifestyle. Your lifestyle involves eating habits, exercise, or lack of, career, family, stress, and hobbies. The common thread between them is you maintain control over all the factors. You can say, “Matt, I have no control over what my boss, spouse, kids, and the meals cooked for me.” You made the initial decisions to take the job, marry the person, have children, and allow someone else to control your meals. It’s hard to admit those things, I agree, ultimately, you’re responsible for all of it.
