International Recognition of Medical Devices
On May 21, 2024, the MHRA issued a Statement of Policy Intent on the International Recognition of Medical Devices. This international collaboration will expedite access to medical technologies in Great Britain, providing access to innovative healthcare technologies while maintaining patient safety.
Currently recognizing EU certifications, the MHRA plans to expand recognition to include Australia, Canada, the EU, and the USA, while retaining authority to reject insufficiently supported applications.
The policy is set to be implemented alongside new core regulations anticipated in 2025, with transitional arrangements for existing UKCA-marked devices. This will be dependent on the outcome of the UK General Election on July 4th 2024.

The Hurricane cocktail was created at the historic Pat O’Brien’s bar, sometime in the 1940’s. The name of the drink comes from the shape of the glass it is served in, which resembles a hurricane lamp - Similar to a modern-day oil, or kerosene, lantern.
During that time, certain liquor, like whiskey, was in short supply but there was an overabundance of rum. Some claim that during WWII, manufacturing replaced domestic distilleries while Caribbean isles continued shipping rum to the states, leading to the oversupply; Others claim that the decade of prohibition lead to imported rum being stockpiled in warehouses, since it couldn’t legally be sold. Both are probably true but either way, this resulted in bar owners being forced to order 50 cases of rum for every 1 case of whiskey. To sell the rum, O’Brien invented the Hurricane; A large glass, heavy handed pour of rum, and some fruit juices to overshadow the liquor.
Hurricane Recipe
- 2 oz. light rum
- 2 oz. dark rum
- 2 oz. passion fruit juice
- 1 oz. orange juice
- ½ oz. fresh lime juice
- 1 tablespoon simple syrup
- 1 tablespoon grenadine
Garnish: orange slice and cherry
Shake all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice and strain into a hurricane glass filled with ice. Garnish with a cherry and an orange slice.
